What can one gain from studying music? This question persists even today. Music is often perceived as a subject without groundbreaking innovations. However, music goes beyond what many might think. It is an applied science that combines both artistry and science, with elements, processes, and numerous aspects of life involved, making it more than mere entertainment. Music enhances people’s lives in various dimensions, including the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual aspects.
Furthermore, we can observe the significant evolution of the music industry, not only in terms of musical genres but also in production processes, presentation methods, media channels, various accessories, and new music platforms. All of these have adapted with time to become more efficient and convenient. The COVID-19 crisis had a profound impact on the music industry, with some facing losses while others turned challenges into business opportunities. People learn and adapt from these experiences, and we can be certain that the music industry will change again in the near future. What matters is our readiness to face these changes.
To prepare for the changes that will inevitably occur in the future, if music receives the correct, appropriate, and sufficient support today, there is an opportunity to develop standards for an integrated science of music. Creating opportunities for learning and skill development in a creative learning space. Let’s not allow Thai music to become a distant memory; we have an opportunity to develop music innovations, inspire the next generation, and promote qualified Future Talent on the world stage. Anything is possible.
Mahidol University is Thailand’s first music institute that offers comprehensive curricula, from high school level to doctoral degrees, in various fields of study. We are committed to building the Creative City of Music, an open music community that supports participation and collaboration, setting successful standards for creating a learning environment full of energy and creativity.
We see opportunities to benefit from the relationship with music, opportunities to develop music education alongside other disciplines, and opportunities to “create.” You can be a part of the creation of the Creative City of Music by contributing to the Mahidol University Endowment Fund. The donated funds will be managed and allocated to support various projects under the Creative City of Music Project and to drive standards for the music industry and the development of Future Talent.
