Ramathibodi Comprehensive Tumor Biobank: Advancing Personalized Medicine for Better Cancer Treatment

Going through cancer treatment may no longer be as painful as it once was. Personalized Medicine reduces side effects, providing patients with precise and tailored treatments that better suit their bodies, ultimately increasing the chances of successful cancer treatment.

Advancing Personalized Medicine for Better Cancer Treatment

Even though two patients may have the same type of cancer, their responses to medication can vary. Personalized Medicine involves using different drugs tailored to each individual, enhancing the chances of curing cancer more effectively.

One of the most common perceptions of cancer treatment is the chemotherapy or radiation therapy, often associated with pain and discomfort. Side effects such as constant nausea or hair loss can cause patients to feel anxious and discouraged, even before treatment begins.

The Faculty of Medicine at Ramathibodi Hospital understands these concerns. To address this, they have developed the Tumor Biobank to collect leftover tissue samples from the cancer diagnosis and treatment process, using them to discover novel cancer biomarkers/ treatment targets and develop Cancer Organoid Models for drug testing, evaluating patient responses to treatment , and predicting potential side effects.

What is a Tumor Biobank?

The Tumor Biobank is a facility that collects and stores clinical specimens from cancer patients, including cancerous tissues, normal tissues, blood components, and bodily secretions, leftover from diagnosis and treatment. These samples are preserved for long-term study and research, providing vital data for cancer research and innovation.

The more support the biobank receives from all sectors, the greater the opportunities for research and innovation to benefit cancer patients. An increased number of research samples will enable better understanding of the various types of cancer cells, ultimately leading to the development of Personalized Medicine for Thai cancer patients.

Personalize medicine can reduce treatment side effects and patient suffering, increasing the chances of a complete recovery

Personalized Medicine assesses how an individual responds to certain medications, allowing doctors to adjust the type and dosage of drugs to suit each patient. This approach increases the likelihood of patients receiving the most suitable medication, improving treatment outcomes. Additionally, it helps reduce medical costs and treatment duration by minimizing unnecessary drug use.

Not only does this lead to more effective treatment, but it also reduces side effects and complications, helping to alleviate patient suffering during the treatment process. This, in turn, improves patients’ mental well-being and boosts their motivation to continue with treatment.

The key to successful cancer treatment is how well a patient’s body responds to the medication. Having precise medical evidence for targeted treatment helps ensure that patients receive the most appropriate care, increasing the chances of recovery and reducing costs in the long run.
