As we know, cancer patients often experience pain from complications related to their condition. This is particularly true for those with head and neck cancer, who frequently experience chronic mouth sores. These sores cause pain when they eat or drink, reducing their appetite, leading to lower nutrient intake, weight loss, and negatively impacting the overall health recovery of the patient.
Understanding the challenges faced by these patients, a team of dentists and researchers at Mahidol University wanted to create an innovation to improve their quality of life.
Over the past 10 years, the team of researchers from the Pharmacology department, Faculty of Dentistry,Mahidol University combined knowledge from the fields of agriculture, pharmacy, and dentistry to develop a Nutraceutical Mouthwash made from Thai rice extract, known as Oral Rice. This product has antibacterial properties and can help treat inflammation in the mouth.
The goal of this innovation is to relieve pain, enabling patients to enjoy eating again, and regain the motivation to recover. At the same time, it ensures that the patient receives sufficient nutrients for better recovery and enhances the effectiveness of medical treatments.
